Utah red light and private collision cameras

Utah red light and private collision cameras might be coming to UTAH in 2026, also a mall is using 'flock' cameras.

My area has been using the ‘Flock’ cameras….

…for the last couple of years or so. Several crimes have been solved by the use of these cameras. Mostly thefts and home invasions.

Privatized surveillance is a convenient way for the police to track people without a warrant. There needs to be constraints on the usage and retention of surveillance data. Tell me why Home Depot needs to collect biometric data in the self checkout kiosk. Pay with a credit card and they have a valid name attached to attach to the facial picture. Who do they sell this data to, and for what purpose? When data is aggregated from multiple sources over time, a complete picture of a person can be constructed and used for any purpose without their control).

Honest I get it

Its not the kind of world I think any of us want to live in. But its what our legislators have / are thrusting upon us.

And they claim its about safety.

I guess in reality, I just dont trust what these folks will do with any of it..

But, yeah, I get it.

the world has changed

In my time, golf was the way to do business. But just imagine how much time and walking that takes.

Today, imho, anybody 45 yo and under, networks via video games. I don't play any myself, because I'm the older generation.

I think it's the same with cameras. My generation pulled a lot of stunts that will never be proven as there were no cams or if there were, the "tapes" are already gone.

Today? That's not the case. For almost 20 years now, people had a video camera in their pocket. So everything is documented and nothing can be done on the sly. All the video that is taken, is backed up, will never be lost, and it's in 2160p. Heck imho the only folks who don't drive with a dash cam, likely don't feel like installing one, or maybe they don't like the look of a device. So even motor vehicles are not anonymous as they drive--behavior has not caught up yet, i.e. road rage that's captured all the time.

So, does it matter? What is it that a person wants to do, undetected?

I can't go into it here, but I was hauled into a back room and questioned, because AI from a cam thought I was suspicious. So all I can say is your greatest fears with cams and technology, they're not unfounded. However, there isn't a darn thing you can do about it, other than to not go out in public.

In the end, human judgement did prevail. The security person apologized and said you haven't done anything untoward, as I had thought all along. But we just wanted to ask you about it and appreciate your understanding.

So again, I want to confirm your greatest fears, they are real. I want to reiterate there is nothing you can do about it. And then also say, based on personal experience, human judgement > AI.

btw I mentioned that our Blink cams had AI notifications for a while, right? "A blue car is reversing on the driveway." etc. etc. Well it stopped because they want like $80/yr for it. I'm sure people will pay and this is a money maker.

flock cameras

They are used extensively in my community.

Lowe's uses them around these parts, too.

It's worse

It's worse than you could possibly imagine. Computer literacy is falling and people have no idea how bad all of this is getting. The internet is being reduced to nothing more than a surveillance tool. There is a concerted push for everything to require you to be online. It's why web apps are so common. It's not exclusive to the US either....

It's going to keep getting worse and worse. Frankly there is very little we can do about it. Most people willingly cheer it on.I mean 3-5 years ago the "why are you worried if you aren't doing anything illegal" was such a common line. That attitude is what keeps up this momentum......

No kidding tell me about it

That's the problem, I can imagine and for me, its become more of a realized nightmare.

I'm all to well aware.

Now I want to back the blue, and to thstcend I do.

That being said, the last time I was stopped, ( out of state on vacation) I rolled down the window and put both hands on the outsidevof the door.

The cop asked for the usual 3cl, license, registration & insurance.

Then they proceded into asking a 1000 questions and I took the position, I'm exercising my right to remain silent. Of course they claimed I was impeding the investigation and I didnt reply. Finally after about 40 minutes of being clobbered with questions from 4 cops simultaneously and I didn't reply to any of them, they finally let me leave. No ticket, no warning, no appology, no idea why I was stopped.

The 911 operators don't get things right, so the cop on the street gets it wrong.

Personally, I can hardly wait for a national law allowing legal carry of firearms in all states at a federal level.

I've actually started designing a camera system to install im my car to have 360° video and independant 4 channel audio just for these kinds of situations. BTW, while the system comes on / goes off with the ignition, theres a switch that when pushed, activates the whole system without the ignition being on. And, hyes, there are 2 180 amp 12 volt marine batteries in the charging loop and the video / audio goes to individual 1 TB SSD'S and can be pushed to an off vehicle storage location.

No.. im not paranoid, but I no longer think its about "justice" in the traditional sense and more about getting arrests and conviction and to hell with the justice.
